On the topic of seasonal living, I love (and highly recommend) Dr. John Douillard’s* take on it all. Plus, his (free!) concise monthly videos and shopping guides lay it out well and make the practicals really straight-forward.

Seasonal eating helps keep our gut health, microbiome and overall physiology in an optimal state by switching things up through the year, ”exercising” different metabolic pathways and letting others rest in turn.

It might sound like extra work (which may be true), but seasonal living promises BIG returns your investment…and can actually be quite fun when you get used to factoring it into your routines!

My morning haul today! :) Lunch was epic.

Modifying how we eat, move, sleep, etc with the seasons allows our bodies to engage different digestive and regenerative processes, which in turn, assures that the various components of our health stay ‘well-oiled.’

(You wouldn’t drive a car in only 1 gear all the time, would you? It’s a similar rationale for why long term keto-diets don’t work unless they are cyclical (a whole other topic…)

Anyway, here’s a fascinating, tangible example of why seasonal rhythms are crucial for optimal health:

MOST of the microbiome in our guts, on our skin and in our lungs (a new discovery!!) come from the AIR we breathe, as opposed to the foods / supplements we eat.

Crazy, right?

So, when different bacteria bloom with the seasons, we need to change up our diets to feed them with foods that match the season to keep them (and us!) happy and healthy.

For example:

We encounter specific bacteria in the winter that help us digest richer winter diets (ie. animal fats, dense complex carbs), promote deeper sleep, and help us stay warmer!

YAY!

Thanks, friends.

So, while we’re designed to live according to the rhythms of nature, the culture of modern life has done a stellar job of dissociating us from these rhythms and innate seasonal sensibilities: we keep the same schedules and habits year-round, and it wears us out from both a systemic and biological standpoint. (It doesn't really make sense to drink chilled, berry-packed smoothies and sleep just 6 hours in the dead of winter...and ist’s NOT good for us in the long run.)

This is a deep, amazing topic - there are many ways to live in sync with seasons.

PS: Pssst…I’m keeping this hush, but I am working on my own online course on the topic of our innate biological rhythms! It’s centred around practical tools and wisdom for living in tune with our biology in this modern era. So many tips and tricks that are NOT in the mainstream, which can totally shift a person’s health, and which are mostly easy and FREE! I plan to launch in early 2021! Please stay tuned and let me know if you’re interested! - it will be unlike any resource out there that I’m aware of!)

Let’s work together and do better at helping you feel better.
